My wife and I recently moved from NYC to the suburbia of the South Bay Area. Each weekend we have enjoyed using our new found space that is a backyard by gardening and enjoying our new fire pit. In anticipation of our housewarming BBQ I decided to build a bocce court, one of my favorite things to do. I wanted it to take as little time as possible and be as cheap as possible. The main cost will be wood, which you can find dirt cheap (if not free) on craigslist. I went with a stack of left over slates from an old fence, but you can use anything that is at least 3 inches high.
Full photos below of the whole process, but basically here’s what I did:
First, outline your court with yarn and remove any plants or debris in the court. I was lucky enough to find a shrub that was actually a big ol’ tree stub. Took an ax to that and got it down no problem. Next I built the walls by digging out an inch or two, putting the slates in the hole and then nailing into a stake on each side. After the full 4 walls were up I lined the court with weed block, covered with light sand, VIOLA! You’re all set!
